Ivorian Yaya Toure wins African Best Footballer Award

ImageThe colourful event was held in Accra with continent’s finest musicians like Salif Keita, Lagbaja and Ladysmith Black Mambazo among others thrilling the distinguish audience with beautiful African songs.
Toure, who helped Manchester City of England to win its first league in 50 years, beat for the second consecutive time (2011, 2012) his compatriot Didier Drogba of Chelsea fame and Cameroonian international, Alexander Song to win the prestigious award.
Many soccer fans had earlier tipped Drogba to win owing to his impressive performance in the Champions League in Europe.
Egyptian striker Mohammed Aboutrika ran away with the prestigious Africa-based player of the year award, with Rainford Kalaba of Zambia picking the second prize while his compatriot, Stophilia Sanzu clinched the third prize.
Most promising player of the year went to Mohammed Salah of Egypt while legendary awards were grabbed by Rugobert Song of Cameroon and Coach Mohammed El Gohary of Egypt.
The African Cup of Nations champions, Chipolopolo of Zambia, won the national team of the year award while Al Ahly of Egypt flew with the club of the year award.
The CAF fair play award went to soccer fans of the Gabonese national team owing to their presence in every match played during the AFCON 2012 co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
Referee Jamil El Harmodi of Nigeria who has been pencilled for Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup picked the referee of the year award while Coach Herve Renard who led the Zambians to lift their first AFCON trophy was bestowed the coach of the year.
On women football, Geneviva Anoma of EquatorialGuinea picked the best player of the year beating her Nigerian and South African counterparts, Ihezu and Modisa respectively.
Best national women’s team was taken away by Equatorial Guinea.
